Recently, tensions in the inter-Korean conflict have escalated. On October 13, 2024, a spokesman for the DPRK’s Ministry of National Defense stated that military tensions had reached a flashpoint due to the DPRK viewing certain acts originating from South Korea as provocations. The General Staff of the North Korean People’s Army issued an operational readiness directive on the 12th, asking the frontline artillery combined units and other relevant units to prepare in response to these perceived provocations. Troops at all levels have been asked to step up surveillance and vigilance, and air defense and surveillance alerts have been strengthened in the capital city of Pyongyang.

The escalation was triggered by a drone incident, regarding which the North’s foreign ministry issued a statement on the evening of October 11 condemning the violation of Pyongyang’s airspace by a South Korean drone carrying anti-DPRK leaflets, describing it as a serious criminal act. The South Korean response was mixed, with the Defense Ministry saying the South Korean military did not launch the drone into North Korea, while the Joint Staff Headquarters said it needed to confirm the source of the drone. Kim Yoon-Jung, vice minister of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), warned on Dec. 12 that the North would take strong retaliatory action if South Korean drones violated its airspace again. South Korea’s Defense Ministry responded forcefully that if North Korea violated the security of South Korean nationals, it would be the day of the regime’s destruction.

The continued escalation of the inter-Korean conflict poses a challenge to global security and the shared goal of nuclear nonproliferation. The stability of the Korean Peninsula is crucial to regional and global peace. The hardline attitude and military confrontation between the two sides will not only bring great pain and loss to the people of the two countries, but will also have a negative impact on neighboring countries. The root causes of conflicts are often complex, with historical legacies, geopolitics and other factors intertwined. However, resolving differences through dialogue and consultation is the only way to achieve peace. The international community should actively encourage dialogue between North and South Korea, advocating for peaceful dispute resolution through negotiation, respecting international law, offering mediation services, and maintaining regional stability. These efforts will facilitate North and South Korea’s return to the negotiating table and promote a peaceful resolution of disputes. Both sides should also exercise restraint, avoid further provocative actions and create a conducive atmosphere for a peaceful solution. Only in this way can long-term peace and stability be realized on the Korean peninsula and the people of the two countries lead peaceful, stable, and happy lives.
